Cancer ribbons are tiny ribbons that people wear on their shirts to show their support for cancer or spread awareness regarding the same. The color of the ribbons depends on the type of cancer that they are trying to create awareness for. To make a cancer ribbon you will need a 1/4-inch wide ribbon, a pair of scissors, a measuring tape, glue or gum and some safety pins. First take the ribbon of the color that corresponds with the type of cancer that you are supporting or trying to create awareness for and then cut pieces that are 3 inches long.

Make sure you cut the ribbon at an angle so that the ribbon does not fray and also so that the ribbons have a nice finished edge.

Create a U-shape by folding down one side of the ribbon.

Then press the ribbon against a table and create a top loop by folding the other end over the folded end again. Adjust it in such a way that equal sides of the ribbon show on both sides of the fold. Put some glue where the ribbon overlaps at the fold and wait for it to dry. You can use a safety pin to attach the pin to your shirt. Repeat the instructions mentioned above to create as many ribbons as is needed.

How Did The Ribbon Come To Become A Medium?

In the 1970s, there was a song called ‘Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree’ that hit the charts and it instantly became famous all over. According to the song, a solider who had gone to war had written to his lover, telling here that she should tie a yellow ribbon around the oak tree where they used to meet if she still wanted him back. He returned to their place to find hundreds of yellow ribbons all around the oak tree. Thus the ribbon came to be looked upon as a medium to send out a message.

In the 1980s, a church in Canterbury, England adopted the ribbon to create awareness for AIDS and called it rainbow ribbons. By the 1990s, almost every AIDS awareness organization had adopted the red ribbon as a universal symbol for AIDS and it became synonymous with the illness. After that, the use of ribbons as a medium to create awareness or show the support for a cause has increased. Different organizations follow different rules as to what color symbolizes what and hence the same color may stand for more that one cause.

English actor Jeremy Irons once wore a red ribbon on his shirt during the Tony awards. As this awards function was watched by a lot of people, it instantly got a lot of media coverage and paper space. This even led the New York Times to label 1992 as the Year of the Ribbon. After this, awareness ribbons have seen widespread use. People even use wristbands and rosettes of various colors just like ribbons to show their awareness for a cause.
